Set up your own space

Borrowing an eyeshadow can seem like a tiny detail when friends are getting ready together. Before opening the palettes, set out a small space of your own: a steady mirror, good lighting and the products you intend to use. You can still chat and exchange ideas without reaching for whatever happens to be nearby.

The FDA recommends washing your hands, keeping tools clean and not sharing eye cosmetics. If someone wants to copy your mascara or liner, show them its name or a photograph of the packaging instead. Bringing your own products lets everyone enjoy a similar look without exchanging things that touch the eye area.

Leave the journey for travelling

Prevent Blindness advises against applying makeup in a moving vehicle or separating lashes with pointed objects. Save these steps for somewhere stable, even when you are a passenger. Finishing a couple of minutes before leaving, or simplifying your makeup, makes more sense than trying to complete a precise line during the journey.

Think about where each item will go while you get ready. You could reserve one area for open products and another for those you have finished using. This is an organisational aid, not a disinfecting procedure: it helps prevent a missing lid or a mix-up between your pencil and a similar-looking one.

Know when to pause

If a cosmetic causes irritation, the FDA says to stop using it and seek medical advice if irritation persists. During an eye infection, it recommends avoiding eye makeup and discarding the eye cosmetics in use when the infection began. Adding more product to improve the appearance is not the next step.

Prevent Blindness recommends removing makeup every night. Prepare for that moment before going out, with an appropriate remover and whatever else you need within reach. Your routine includes coming home, not just taking a photograph of the finished look. Choosing a simpler result can be just as intentional as adding another layer.
