Choose one intention

Before practising, decide whether you want a soft line or a sharply defined edge. Avoid trying to solve thickness, a wing and lower-lash shading all at once. Maybelline suggests a blendable pencil for a softer effect and liquid liner for precise strokes. Begin with whichever movement feels less demanding rather than the most elaborate finished look.

Set up a steady mirror, good light and a product intended for the eye area. Work without rushing and with clean hands. The FDA advises against sharing eye cosmetics and recommends stopping immediately if a product causes irritation. If that irritation continues, seek advice from a healthcare professional rather than trying to cover it with more makeup.

Build the line before the wing

Rest your elbow if that feels comfortable, and move close enough to the mirror to see the roots of your upper lashes clearly. Maybelline recommends keeping eyeliner close to those roots. You can work in a series of short strokes rather than expecting one uninterrupted sweep to produce the whole line on your first attempt.

Pause, open your eyes and look straight ahead. Then decide whether to connect a small gap or leave the line as it is. This exercise does not require lining the waterline or surrounding the entire eye with colour. A discreet upper-lash line can be a complete look in its own right, without an added flick.

Correct one area rather than restarting everything

If a stroke lands out of place, remove it gently with a clean applicator and eye-area makeup remover, following the product instructions. Maybelline suggests practising liner before mascara and eyeshadow to make corrections easier. Prepare the area before drawing again, rather than repeatedly rubbing at it in pursuit of an absolutely perfect edge.

Compare both eyes from a normal distance. If you like the overall effect, finish there even if the strokes are not exact copies. Save a few minutes on another occasion to try a short wing. Practising one variation at a time helps you identify which movements you enjoy and which you prefer to simplify for everyday makeup.
